1. Technology Description
Three-dimensional humanoid targeting systems manufactured from a proprietary Polyurethane formula. Each fully-modular target system can withstand
an unprecedented number of rounds and is customizable for full-spectrum scenario and firearms practice applications.
The system weighs approximately 35 lbs and stands at the height of a short adult, with distinct facial features for the closest-to-life training available. Depending on firearm caliber, the system can withstand up to 10,000 rounds, with a favorable performance against rifle calibers. The system is also visible under night-vision apparatus.
Each target requires minimal assembly and can be used in any climate.
2. Concept of Employment
The target shows significant promise in two areas;
Lethality and Training Aids
This target system can increase soldier Lethality through desensitization of engaging a human form. This is an expansion of the concepts detailed by Lt. Col. Grossman (US Army, ret.) in “On Killing: The Psychological Cost of Learning to Kill in War and Society”. The ability to prepare for combat and the neutralization of enemy combatants is also known to reduce Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.
This target system potential as a Training Aid lies in the system’s customizability, modularity and available accessories. Lethal and non-lethal weapons are available as accessories and can be placed in the hands and arms of this target system, which have a similar range of motion to a real person. The organ feedback system on the Chest Plate allows for the honing of marksmanship skills.
3. Target Comparison
PAPER VS HUMANOID. Modern rifle training programs utilize paper targets, which is an effective but limited way to prepare a soldier for real combat. This target system was designed in consultation with military units of the US and Italy to address this.
PTSD. According to the United States Department for Veteran’s Affairs, experts estimate that up to 20 % of Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom veterans, up to 10 % of Gulf War veterans, and up to 30 % of Vietnam War veterans have experienced PTSD. Consequently, demand for PTSD treatment continues to grow. We see an opportunity to mitigate this increasing trend through the desensitization aspect of our target system.
NIGHT-TIME TRAINING. The paper targets in use do not register when viewed through night-vision goggles. This has been addressed in the design of the target system system; our targets glow in the same manner as a human being when viewed under night-vision goggles.
