Truthfully, everyone should have some knowledge of self-defense. Ideally, we will never have to employ any self-defense techniques in dangerous situations, but it is better to be prepared. There are numerous items and self-defense weapons that can come in handy in these situations, and one of these is the stun gun.
What Is a Stun Gun?
A stun gun is a small item that employs high voltage electricity to rapidly stop an attacker. When used on a person, it transfers energy into an individual’s muscles, causing these muscles to work rapidly and become inefficient. This gives the user a chance to escape from the attack.
Sometimes, the terms “stun guns” and “Taser” are used interchangeably, but there is a large difference between these two devices. A stun gun is a direct contact device, which means that you have to physically make the device contact the attacker’s body. In contrast, a Taser is a device that can repel an attacker from up to 15 feet away. It has a trigger that allows you to shoot a set of probes at the attacker.
Putting Your Stun Gun to Use
The first step before you ever use your stun gun is to familiarize yourself with it. You need to get used to its weight, feel, and functions to use it effectively. There is a safety switch somewhere on the device that you will have to turn off before it will work. This is to prevent accidental firing. To use the device, you press and hold down the trigger button and make contact with the target.
A stun gun employs a high voltage charge but has low amperage. This means that it can cause an attacker significant pain but will not permanently injure them. Depending on the attacker’s physical shape and where on the body the stun gun is applied, the charge could disable them for up to 30 minutes, giving you plenty of time to escape and call the police.
When it comes to using your stun gun on a human being, some areas are better to target than others. You want to target a larger mass and an area that won’t be moving. For example, don’t aim for a hand because the attacker can easily pull it away. Instead, aim for a shoulder or stomach area, as these are large targets that can’t be pulled away easily. If possible, aim for nerve center areas such as under the arm and upper hip. Hitting nerve centers will affect the whole body, but the stun gun will work wherever it makes contact.
Be Sure to Check Your State’s Laws and Restrictions on Stun Guns
As a side note, be sure to check the local regulations for stun guns in your state. Some states have certain restrictions in place regarding stun guns. It is important to know these regulations so that you do not accidentally use or carry your stun gun illegally. States that currently have restrictions in place are IL, MA, MI, CT, HI, NY, and RI.
