Safety matters:
You must practice and understand all safety issues associated with using the baton. Do not open the baton with anyone or anything in close proximity. Make sure the baton is lightly lubricated (WD-40 or gun oil is recommended). Do not hit any target with the baton tip or else it will bend.
Opening and closing your baton:
Hold the baton firmly in your hand and quickly flick your wrist. This will open the baton. You want to have a secure, but not tight, hold of the baton. Since ease of motion is important to strike effectively, a grip that is too firm will decrease your ability to strike quickly and smoothly.
Collapse your baton by holding it perpendicular to the ground and tapping the tip on the ground. Continue to tap the ground until all sections of the baton have retracted and the baton is in its closed position. Laws regarding the possession and use of expandable batons:

Protect it from moisture. If it gets wet, dry it thoroughly. Once a week expand your baton and wipe it with a dry cloth. Always store it in a dry place. Do not store it in a leather pouch (leather holds moisture). If you have to use the baton during a defense incident involving striking any hard object, you should inspect the weapon thoroughly for damage.
